Book News

Book to Film

Deborah Smith has sold film rights to two of her books.  Sweet Hush (Little, Brown & Company, January 2003), a contemporary comedy-drama novel about the family chaos that follows when the son of a Georgia apple farmer elopes with the President's daughter, has been optioned in a mid-six-figure deal by producer Deborah Martin Chase (The Princess Diaries) and executive producer Brad Epstein (About A Boy) for Disney.

Film rights to On Bear Mountain (Little, Brown & Company, 2001) have been optioned by independent producer Chris McIntyre.  The novel was a Townsend Prize nominee for literature.

Deborah Smith is the author of more than 30 novels.  She is also a publisher and editor for BelleBooks, a small Southern press based in Smyrna, Georgia.  In 2003, Berkley Books will begin publishing the mass market editions of BelleBooks' small town series, Mossy Creek, in which Deborah is a contributor.

"Cheap Psychological Tricks" in Radio Syndication

Big River Radio, Inc. has signed a letter of agreement to syndicate Dr. Perry Buffington's daily, 60 second radio feature, "Cheap Psychological Tricks."  The program launch date is September 2, 2002 on Big River Radio, Inc., which creates programming for 175 radio stations, nationwide.

A licensed psychologist, Buffington is the author of seven books, including two bestsellers.  He is also a syndicated columnist with Universal Press and former contributing editor to Sky, Delta Air Lines' in-flight magazine.

Going, Going, Gone!

The Gone With the Wind Collection of Herb Bridges goes on the auction block  at Christie's New York on July 24, 2002 (Sale 1144).  The collection began in the early 1960s with a first edition of Margaret Mitchell's novel.  Four decades later, it includes nostalgic books, posters, costumes, jewelry, scripts, and more.  Now 72 years-old, Bridges decided to depose of the collection and use the funds for his grandchildren's education.  Herb Bridges has published several books on Gone With the Wind
